I don’t know how Season 3 can live up to season 2, but I’m along for the ride!

By completely reinventing itself so that it's not really comparable to season 2, in the same way that season 2 reinvented itself versus season 1.

The show's capacity to always change and always push the narrative forward in new and unexpected ways is one of my favorite things about it.

    That’s what I’m hoping for.

This new character Simone is wholly inappropriate!
    ...
    I’m kidding! She’s great! :)

I’m surprised by the addition of Simone. I didn’t expect new core cast to be added, but she and Chidi are great together. Very interested in how this plays, of course, against Michael’s narrative the Eleanor and Chidi have to be together to be good people.

I’ll now close this comment in a truly terrible way.

Is she a core cast member? I assumed she's just in it as a guest star and may not be there in every episode. I'll have to check the opening credits next week.

But playing against Michael's narrative is probably exactly why the writers brought her in.

She’s had about as much screen time and dialogue as Janet, so she seems core to this season initially. It remains to be seen how much of a presence she has going forward. But I’m guessing she’s going to be a solid supporting role.

Fair point. Although the counterargument to that is by nature of their setup this year, Janet will have something of a reduced role. Unlike Michael, she can't get away with going down to Earth (the doorman would definitely question that), so she can't interact with the four humans, at least for the time being with the setup they have going, which will limit the amount of screen time she can have while they play out the Eleanor-and-company-are-alive scenario.

Bold move, saying what this show can or can’t do with its characters. ;)

I’m guessing Simone and Trevor will have similar screen time overall, perhaps serving partially as yin and yang to each other against the ensemble.

Good point. I should rephrase: the setup they currently have in place would present more logistical issues for getting Janet to interact with the four humans than Michael.

Yet again, I finish an episode of this series with absolutely no idea what comes next. What an exhilarating feeling.

I'm glad they didn't drag the Trevor thing out. A little of that character goes a long way.

The idea that much of the insanity of 2018 is the result of Michael's manipulation of the timeline is brilliant.

And the inversion of the Outback Steakhouse concept -- so that this time it’s the Australians making a trite, shallow, exaggerated and distorted caricature of America into a middle-tier table service restaurant chain instead of the other way around -- just about killed me... especially the Manifest Destiny Special.

"That Hugh Jackman musical about P.T. Barnam? It made like $400 million dollars" had me laughing so hard that I couldn't hear the next line and had to back up the recording to catch it.

After this week's episode, I have to concede that you were right here. I just thought that the Doorman would sense a red flag if Michael tried to bring a Janet down to Earth with him, which obviously didn't happen, or if it did, was explained away by Michael somehow. And they didn't show us that scene, but we are meant to infer that it happened.

I'm glad you're wrong on this one and that the judge at least did them the favor of dispatching Trevor. However, if Michael's ultimate goal is to get the four humans into the Good Place, they're really screwed now. Even though they escaped, she's still the judge, so how will they possibly convince her to let them in now?

Also, because Chidi thinks that Trevor is a legitimate part of the study, I wonder how he and the others will react to Trevor's disappearance next week.

Just rewatched this episode. I want more of the desperately-insecure Al-Jamil/Hemsworths. Larry Hemsworth was a fantastic creation.

    Also, two words:

    Blake.
    Beartles.
